Truvada and Truvada for PrEP®, manufactured by Gilead Sciences, Inc., are tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) medications prescribed to treat HIV infection and to reduce the risk of HIV infection. Both medications disrupt the reverse transcriptase enzyme, used by HIV-infected cells to replicate new viruses. Truvada has been linked to elevated risk for kidney and bone damage, including renal failure, decreased bone density, osteoporosis, and lactic acidosis. Lawsuits filed allege Gilead knew as far back as 2001 that Truvada was “highly toxic in prescribed doses and caused a risk of permanent and possibly fatal damage to the kidneys and bones.
