Attorneys General Launching Probe on Instagram Algorithms and Children

A group of attorneys general from various states, including California, New Jersey and Florida are launching a probe into how Instagram promotes its app to children and young adults and whether the company encourages users to spend prolonged periods on the app and whether its practices violate state consumer protection laws.

The bipartisan coalition, which includes representatives from eight states across the country, plans to look into the techniques that parent company Meta Platforms, Inc. uses to encourage users to stay on for long periods, despite evidence that such use can cause mental and physical health harms.
